Deli Bakery Clerk

Significant job responsibilities include:

  • Greeting all customers, responding to customer questions/requests and explaining store policies in a courteous manner.
  • Selling, selecting, wrapping/packaging the products customers want to purchase.
  • Writing down customer's special orders/requests.
  • Entering the customer's purchases on the cash register, receiving payment and making change when applicable.
  • Preparing/organizing the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unloading trucks, verifying the merchandise against the invoice, inspecting the delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sorting cases for stocking or product preparation and coding date the product.
  • Cleaning department floors, mirrors, case, tables, cooler, freezer, production equipment, product preparation area, and shelves. Safely using cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • Loading stocking carts/pallets, transporting cases to sales floor/cooler/freezer/product preparation area either on stocking carts or pallets, opening cases, placing merchandise in the designated cooler/freezer/case/shelf/display position/area, checking the product code/freshness date and "facing/fronting"/rotating the front row of each display.
  • Ensuring the safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a supervisor of any potential hazard immediately. Picking up/removing all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the sales floor or product preparation area immediately.
  • Performing miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and managers, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business.
  • Understanding the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, case cutter, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, slicer, scales, wrapper, cash register, hot bar, fryer, stove, oven, proofer.
  • Counting and recording individual items of merchandise for inventory.
  • Properly using PLU and scale system.
  • Evaluating product quality and moving damaged/unsalable and "returnable" products from the case to the preparation area, re-processing the merchandise into a saleable form or marking the product down in price.
  • Removing trash from the aisle or product preparation area and operating the baler.
  • Changing signs, light bulbs, shelf signs/tags and price markers on the case/shelf display.
  • Communicating with the department manager on problems, recommendations for change and merchandising ideas.
  • Checking case and cooler/freezer temperatures 3 times daily.
  • Replenishing supplies on the sales floor and in the product preparation area.
  • Recording "out-of-stock" conditions and the time they occur, reporting to the department manager.
  • Preparing/packaging/labeling product and filling stock.
