Duties

  • You will prepare policy guidance in response to firefighter program related executive orders, public law, regulations, and agency requirements.
  • You will determine measures to reduce or eliminate the potential for fire or explosion.
  • You will verify personnel use the correct personal protection equipment during firefighting incidents to ensure safety.
  • You will identify defects of fire protection systems (e.g., equipment, clothing) to maintain operational efficiency.
  • You will establish on-scene control procedures (e.g., zone control, decontamination) in a hazardous material incident.
  • You will explain work requirements to fire inspectors and other employees related to new or changed procedures.

Requirements Conditions of employment

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level.
  • Applicants must meet the Department of Defense (DoD) certification requirements.
  • Candidates for firefighter positions must not have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This is a Mission Essential position.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • This position works a 56 hour weekly, 112 hour bi-weekly embedded schedule.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.

Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Providing technical expertise, advice, and supervision in fire protection efforts; 2) Inspecting facilities and structures for fire hazards; 3) Conducting training on fire safety practice and procedures. NOTE: This information must be supported in your resume to be considered for this position. This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Operations, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Instructor I. Incumbent will have one year to obtain Public Fire and Life Safety Educator. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. Also requires National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT). If you do not possess all of the above certifications, and provide verification with your application, you will be rated ineligible.
